WASTE MINIMISATION
DIVERTING WASTE FROM LANDFILL
Hawkes Bay Chilled Distribution is committed to waste minimisation, and all customers using Anchor milk can return empty bottles as part of Anchor’s national recycling scheme.
Empty (dry and sealed) Anchor milk and cream bottles can be collected by our Delivery Specialists and then, in a reverse logistics supply chain, are consolidated and either recycled off shore or utilised domestically to make plastic products like pipes, storage containers and fence posts.
Hawkes Bay Chilled Distribution - the local franchisee for Anchor Milk – is also a Sustainable HB Zero Waste Hub / Kererū partner.
Recognising that nothing happens for free, HBCD has stepped up on behalf of Hawkes Bay businesses to sponsor Tetra Pak recycling for the region, and by partnering with Sustainable Hawke’s Bay, we’re supporting the charity by providing a simple to use service that cafés, restaurants and the general public can use to meaningfully reduce waste to landfill.
Businesses can drop off their clean, dry and opened Tetra Paks directly to Sustainable Hawke’s Bay, or for those that are receiving deliveries by HBCD, talk to Martha and Olly about having your Tetra Paks collected. Schools are also welcome to recycling the Tetra Paks for their Kickstart milk deliveries - a great way to embed environmental values with youngsters!
OUTER PACKAGING
Everything we deliver is in a reusable plastic milk crates which work like stackable shelves. Crates are used to deliver milk and other chilled food products, then collected from our customers to be reused over and over. Anchor milk crates are made from 10% recycled content.
We've worked with local supplier, HB Eggs, to reduce the number of cardboard boxes we handle. By supplying trays of eggs “boxless” utilising our reusable milk crates we’ve reduced our box usage by around 4,000 per year.
ZERO FOOD WASTE
We support Nourished for Nil who rescue surplus food in Hawkes Bay and redistribute this food within our community. Their mission is Zero Food Waste and if we have milk or cream nearing their best before dates we call the team and it’s delivered and distributed the same day.
For product that’s moved beyond its best before date our local Pig Farmers Helen and Michael decant the bottles and use the milk to supplement feed for their herd.
We minimise waste in our depot by diverting the following materials from landfill: plastic, tins, aluminium, and any glass bottles used by the team, plus shrink wrap and cardboard.
CARBON EMISSIONS
We’re exploring E-trucks to reduce our carbon emissions. Currently the payload and range combination doesn’t suit (very heavy) milk.
Our Delivery Specialists are conscious of idling to conserve fuel use.
LOVE LOCAL
At the beginning of each term we deliver thousands of Anchor Lite UHT Milk 1L cartons to schools around Hawkes Bay as part of the Kickstart breakfast programme sponsored by Fonterra and Sanitarium. It makes us feel good to be part of the morning routine!
